In the same way, Motherwell uses for the title of a series painted in 1962 the indication of the place where it was completed: Beside the Sea. What has not been sufficiently noted is the fact that, however reduced it may be (with regard to the process of realization: Mondrian, Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue, 1939-42, or the number of the work within the year's production: Pollock, Number 32, 1950), the title can in no case be pictorial. Since it cannot in any way be a pictorial effect, it is inevitably confined to description (even if it only describes its place in the career of the artist); it is literary and, to the extent that describing is the opposite of defining, belongs to a literature which is more or less legendary.
