Truth, health and the correct food choices become the new moral codes, and the fat pig becomes the symbol of bad or criminal choices that harm the earth and the self. Health is a subjective category that can be understood in a social, rather than bio-medical form; what is considered healthy changes according to social context.

The tough rhetoric of the TV series is still prevalent (and I will discuss this shortly) but it is tempered by the fostering of a nurturing female space. Each section begins with a letter identifying a particular type of sartorially challenged woman. She is addressed as ‘Friend’ and the letter is signed with the handwritten signatures of Susannah and Trinny. They offer her ‘good, practical, woman-to-woman advice that we know works’. They manipulate the reader into believing that the ‘fun-loving woman is still in you.

It identifies different categories of women and locates the cause of her inability to change and to look good. Addressing one particular ‘type’ of woman, it tells her: ‘you don’t give a damn about yourself’ (Constantine and Woodall, 2005, 18). Another category of woman, who is accused of dressing like her teenage daughter, is rewarded with public humiliation for this transgression: You are walking down the high street, denim-clad butt swaying, pink sparkly clips holding back your sunlit tresses, Mickey Mouse T-shirt, a tiny bit short, displaying your tummy.
