Horses were suited to the nomadic lifestyle of the humans of the area, who by that time already had cattle, sheep, and goats. Evidence of the horse’s first use as a draft animal comes from the Sintashta fortified village site in the southern Urals, dating from 2000 BC, where horses were buried with chariots. By 1000 BC domesticated horses had spread across the grasslands of Asia and into Europe and North Africa. Heavy breeds were developed on the steppes of Asia and in Persia to carry heavily armored men.

They are then simply mixed in a pail and hatched, and the fry are raised, all under carefully controlled conditions. These fish therefore do not actually breed in the accepted manner. Tilapia, which are mouth brooders, are generally allowed to mate and spawn naturally in their ponds, when the fertilized eggs are then held in a parent’s mouth until they hatch, but they may be taken to be hatched and raised artificially. Injections of gonadotropin—a hormone from the pituitary glands of other fish—are now used to stimulate reproduction in farmed fish.

In Thailand, integrated systems combine pig and duck farming with fish farming, at least of the herbivorous tilapia, carp, and the omnivorous iridescent catfish (Pangasius hypopthalmus), and the manure and uneaten food provides the nutrients for the phytoplankton that the fish eat. The farm systems are integrated, livestock pens being placed alongside the fish ponds so that the manure can be washed straight into the water. Ducks, and sometimes chickens, may be housed in pens above the ponds, and their wastes drop through the mesh floors.
