They need to clearly understand the game, and then their hard work should help them be successful. But what does it take to be successful when the rules of the game have changed? The most politically astute managers recognize the changes early, adjust their game plans, and coach their employees to be successful under the new rules.

Managers and employees can then use this feedback to articulate accomplishments and reflect more accurately on performance. Why should you make the extra effort to encourage your employees to take the credit for their accomplishments? As the manager, you need the best information you can get to assess how strong your team really is, and you need your employees to tell you, in language you understand, about anything that will affect their goals or proves their competence. If your employees do a better job of identifying and communicating about their most important competency-based accomplishments, you will have better information that you can use, as their coach, to recognize their true accomplishments.

Children are encouraged to be team players, and are often taught, subtly, that it is not great to stand out and to be a star. It is often difficult to recognize what you contributed to making something successful unless you worked entirely alone, which is unusual in today’s workplace. Based upon the work I’ve done with organizations, it is clear that most employees and managers have difficulty taking credit for their work. As a result, many people tend to understate their accomplishments. Good career coaches spend a large amount of time and effort encouraging their clients to take credit for the work they have done so their resumes will be stronger.
