Studies of secondary teachers’ first encounters (Wragg, 1989) showed that teachers often tried to make a big and sometimes macho impact in their very first lesson, with deviant behaviour usually being dealt with immediately and publicly.
Within half an hour classes were working at some prescribed assignment (‘what I did on holiday’ still being a firm fixture) or being asked to choose a book from the library or the reading corner, while the teacher dealt with administrative matters or with pupils who had questions or problems.
