One alternative therapy that many asthma patients try is the Buteyko method, first developed by Russian physician Konstantin Buteyko in the 1950s. Buteyko believed that the lungs of asthma patients are affected during times when the patient is not undergoing distress. He called the condition “hidden hyperventilation,” meaning that asthma patients breathe in too much air. Normal lungs breathe in 4 to 6 liters of air per minute, but Buteyko found that asthma patients often breathe in 14 liters per minute.
