It explores the limits of tile-hanging and provides a clear precedent for Aalto’s own experiments in merging roof and wall to achieve a plastic continuity of building form. 24 For more than a decade, from 1894 when he won the Turku church competition until 1905, Lars Sonck contributed a number of major building designs. These, taken with the work of Gesellius, Lindgren and Saarinen, provide the core of Finland’s National Romantic architecture and the very substantial foundation on which the later developments in Finnish architecture, with their distinctive national characteristics, were based.

The painted decorations are by Gallen-Kallela, and his ‘Flame’ rya14 has a central position in the interior. There are tiles from Louis Sparre’s Iris factory at Porvoo, as well as some chairs designed by Sparre15 himself; while Gallen-Kallela’s pupil, Eric Ehrström (1881—1934), contributed some of the metalwork, with the remainder being executed under Saarinen’s direction by the local blacksmith. 46 The interior design of Hvitträsk reflects many influences absorbed from the partners’ contemporaries; the metalwork, for example, derives from Sonck, some of the furniture owes a debt to Henri van der Velde (an influence also to be absorbed by Aalto), while the nursery has distinct echoes of Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Certainly, in his design for the department store Helsingfors Magasins31 he once again put himself ahead of his colleagues, and this project clearly anticipates Frosterus’s later design for the Stockmann department store. Frosterus’s ‘Taos’ block of flats, built in Helsinki in 1913 59 Eliel Saarinen: Lahti town hall, 1911-12 60 Indeed, Saarinen and Frosterus learned a great deal from each other in the period that followed. For example, in his ‘Taos House’ block of flats in Helsinki32 Frosterus developed a simplified plasticity of modelling in the façade which looked towards Modernism; and the oriel windows over the ground-floor openings in his design were emulated by Saarinen in the Lahti town hall;33 while the Kajana Folkskoletävlan34 (Adult Education Centre competition) shows Frosterus leaning on the inspiration of Saarinen’s 1911 Magasins design while creating a stepping-stone towards his approach to the Stockmann store.
