In other words, as Kawabuchi correctly notes, animation, computer games and characters may be recognized as originating in Japan and their consumption may well be associated with high technology or miniaturization; however, the appeal of such products is relatively independent of cultural images of the country of production, Japan.

In the late 1980s a manga heroine with a strong subjectivity and activity appeared at a time when a law was introduced advocating equal opportunity employment between the sexes, encouraging women to pursue their own careers.
